DIY end of tenancy cleaning: a workable room-by-room approach

If you decide to clean the property yourself, use a detailed task list and suitable methods rather than a last-hour tidy. Start when belongings no longer prevent access to the agreed areas.

Read the inventory and plan the workload.

Identify the rooms, appliances and storage needing attention. Separate ordinary dirt from wear or damage and record issues that cleaning cannot address. Allow time for equipment preparation, drying and a final review, not only the active cleaning.

Empty cupboards and appliances before starting. Defrost a freezer in line with its instructions and contain meltwater safely. Keep utilities available, protect belongings and arrange a safe route around the work. Follow product labels and never mix cleaning chemicals.

Work by material and task.

Remove loose soil before damp wiping, choose products compatible with the finish and use clean cloths. Give kitchen grease and bathroom deposits separate attention. Do not scrape delicate coatings or soak materials that cannot tolerate moisture. Avoid unsafe access to high areas.

Use the full cleaning checklist to track completed areas. Vacuuming a carpet is different from specialist carpet cleaning, and inside glass does not automatically make outside windows accessible.

Know when to change the plan.

If a task needs specialist treatment, unsuitable access or time you no longer have, ask for advice before attempting it. Tell any provider what has already been applied to a stain or surface. It is better to describe the condition accurately than to hide a rushed experiment.

If you choose professional end of tenancy cleaning instead, confirm the scope and availability. Keep the finished-condition record and any receipt with your handover documents; neither DIY effort nor a paid clean decides every issue in an inspection.
